Get Out!

News Flash: After an incredibly horrible “tweet” yesterday by actress Roseanne Barr, ABC has today terminated her contract, ended the reboot of her once-popular sitcom before its second year could air. The Captain feels bad for the other actors on the show who now suffer from Barr’s stupidity, but I rejoice that ABC did the right thing.

* * * * *
Now, on to today’s post…

My mother raised me to be independent.

I don’t know if that was intentional or not.

In fact, there have been times in recent years when I have suspected what she would really like more than anything else is for all of us to bring our spouses and children and move back in with her.

But there’s 25 of us now, spread out across the country, so that’s not going to happen.

When your humble Captain graduated from high school, I shook the dust from my boots and headed out into the world searching for adventure, never planning to look back.

I spent one summer at home between college and seminary; I was working locally to save up money for school.

So while the Captain is not surprised, it was disheartening to hear the news story last week about the parents in New York who had to sue their 30-year-old son to get him to move out of their house!

WTF!

Seriously! He was not working. He was not contributing anything toward household expenses. At 30 years old he was simply mooching off his parents.

The relationship got so bad they weren’t even talking to one another. They were reportedly communicating through letters.

But apparently someone was still feeding him and doing his laundry… and I don’t know how he got around town since his Volkswagen was broken down in their driveway.

Ultimately, after several threatening letters, the parents offered him $1,100 and two-weeks notice to get out… and he said “no”.

Some suggested they should have disconnected the internet. Perhaps that would get him out.

In fact, he argued in court that he needed at least six months to get out.

Furthermore, he claims he can’t take a job because he is “working hard at being a good father”.

“That’s why I am not the CEO of a big company.”

I shit you not. He really said that!

Captain’s Note: According to reliable reports, he became a father eight years ago – that’s when he moved in with his parents – but lost visitation privileges two years ago.

Here’s an idea – if you want to be a good father, get a job and move out of your parents’ house, you moron!

And last week a Judge told him to do just that.

Uhm, no. A real judge.

But the Captain is anticipating an appeal of that ruling.

Sadly, many are saying this loser is “typical” of the Millennial generation.

He insists he is not a Millennial because he is “conservative”.

Captain’s Note: Millennials are the generation born between 1981 – 1996. Many say this is the first generation in America where the children will not have a better life than their parents had. Once they leave home, their quality of life will necessarily go down.

But the Captain knows several of that generation who are intelligent and caring and PRODUCTIVE members of society.

And they are not still living with their parents!

Now I’m not saying the Captain is perfect, by any means. But I don’t understand how a person can sponge off another – especially one’s parents – when he is perfectly able to work.

Nonetheless, his story has become a national news sensation and as a result he has received several offers for work; a radio “shock jock” just gave him $3,000 for an appearance on his show.

We’ll see if he can manage all that… and still be a good father…

Remembering

This is for those who serve or have served our country in the armed forces.

Because what follows is probably going to really piss off some people.

Tomorrow is Memorial Day, a day set aside each year to remember those who gave their lives in military service to our country.

The key words there are “gave their lives”.

They are dead.

So this day is not about veterans.

No! Veterans have their own day in November.

And it’s not about those currently in uniform.

No! They are honored on the third Saturday in May.

And while I do respect those who serve or have served, I don’t believe we must give over EVERY holiday to them!

Thanksgiving…

Christmas…

Fourth of July…

Mates, at the present time we have an all-volunteer army.

And at the risk of sounding ungrateful, these men and women knew what they were getting into when they enlisted. The Captain appreciates their service, but no, I don’t feel sorry for them that they can’t be home for Thanksgiving.

I hate that they are being shot at, but that is part of their job. They knew that going in.

Captain’s Note: Although no one is shooting at me, it should be noted that the Captain works weekends and holidays and I am on 24-hour call. I have missed out on many family dinners, vacations, and sleep.

And no one thanks me...

But this is not about me.

I am writing about Memorial Day. And this is what Memorial Day is about.

The men and women buried here - black, white, Christian, Muslim, Jew, Atheist - gave their lives in defense of our freedoms and the freedoms of the world.

So, tomorrow...

 Remember.
