Misgnomers

"You can't always get what you want..."

Mick Jagger sang those words many years ago.

He was so right.

Yesterday, while scanning Facebook, the Captain came across a post from a group named “Progressive Christians and Friends” that I joined last year. They occasionally post some good stuff. I rarely read or engage in the comments though.

But yesterday I did.

Here is the post:

An evocative question, right?

Probably leading the reader to the assumed answer that Jesus was a progressive so he would have taken the shot.

Captain’s Note: News polls are showing that 49% of right wing / Republican / Trumpite males do not plan on getting the vaccination.

The Captain did not give the expected response.

No surprise there.

But seriously, why would Jesus need a vaccination?

Didn’t he have the power to heal?

The conversation went something like this: [The Captain's name has been redacted.]

Actually, the Scripture says, "To fulfill all righteousness."

So I pushed on:

Yes, that is, I suppose, a "progressive" eye roll.

Then a Page Administrator responds:

Apparently "Progressive Christians" can be pompous asses!

The Admin did not explain.

The conversation continued, but took a pro-vaxx turn:

Fair question... or so the Captain thought.

Again, from a Page Admin!

The Captain may have brushed aside comments from others, but this attitude from the Admin speaks more to the nature of the group.

When another group member asked how the Admin's response was "insulting", the Captain had had enough.

I pulled alongside and fired a broadside!

To paraphrase one of my favorite comedians,

"I don't need to sit here and be insulted!

I can be insulted anywhere!"

Seriously, if I had wanted such pompous, superior attitudes, I would have joined an Evangelical or Conservative Christian page.

Those folks have ALL the answers!

Believe it or not, there are people out there who are looking for "community" - whether it is a fraternity, a church, a right-wing political group, a militia, or just a Facebook page.

Insults rarely endear one to the body.

So, if the Captain doesn't get ejected from this "progressive" group, I'll quit it anyway.

It's definitely not what it is labeled.

 Mick Jagger was right.
