But seriously…
Recently, a storm blew up in Washington over former
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s exclusive use of a private email account during her
tenure in the State Department. It has been alleged that she deleted
thousands of emails from her time as SoS, and has failed to hand over many of
the rest.
What ever could she be hiding?
“Bill, pick up a loaf
of bread and a gallon milk on your way home. It looks like it might snow.”
“Chelsea, please don’t
name the baby Charlotte. I know it’s a cute story, but Charlotte was the
spider, not the pig. We’ll talk about it when I get home from Baghdad.”
“Mr. Prime Minister,
the answer is still “NO”. Please. I am a married woman!”
There is no doubt in the Captain’s mind that this storm was
created by those who want to discredit Clinton before she makes a run for the Presidency
in 2016. She is the leading (as yet unannounced) contender, if not the only
contender for the Democrats right now.
But considering the recently reported lapses and breaches in
cyber-security in Washington, Clinton may have been onto something.
For example, I doubt that anyone is trying to hack my AOL account.
Yes, AOL still exists.

Anyway, Clinton’s response was that she used her private
email account simply because she didn’t want to have to carry two phones.
Pretty lame, I know.
But then came Senator Lindsey Graham’s (R-S.C.) response to
the “scandal”.
Before I go there, let me remind you: Senator Graham has a
JD from the University of South Carolina School of Law. He served in the U.S.
Air Force for two years, and later as a National Guard – rising to the rank of
Colonel. He worked as a lawyer in private practice before being elected to
South Carolina’s House of Representatives (1993-1995), a springboard to the
U.S. House of Representatives (1995-2003). From there he took Senator Strom
Thurmond’s seat in the U.S. Senate (2003-present), and now, at age 59, he is eyeing the Grand Prize: the White
House.

Now back to Graham’s response. On “Meet the Press” this past
weekend, the potential presidential candidate announced what would be his level
of “transparency” should he be elected Leader of the Free World:
“You can have every email I’ve ever sent. I’ve never sent one. I don’t know what that makes me.”
The Captain would
suggest (among other adjectives that won’t appear here): a Luddite.
Do we seriously want a President in the 21st
Century who has never sent an email?
I’ve got 90-year-old ladies in my church who surf the web,
send and receive emails, and are even on Facebook!
When Barak Obama was elected President in 2008, the Secret
Service took away his cell phone.
He cried for weeks until they gave him a toy phone to play with!
Mr. Senator, this is not some new-fangled invention! Look around you. Email is driving the US Postal Service out of business! The USPS saw that coming as far back as 1977 - 15 years before you won your first election!
And you still haven't embraced the technology?!?
Makes me wonder if they even have The Internets over there
in South Carolina…
No offense intended to the good people of South Carolina. Your Senator is just not representing you well.
Again, the Captain is not endorsing any candidate at this
point. But it boggles this old rum-soaked brain to think that we could have a
President of these United States of America who has never – NEVER! – sent an email!
NEVER!
And what's worse, he views that as a badge of honor!
